Warpstormer – s/t

In a realm where heaviness can really make or break a band depending on their approach and execution, it can sometimes take more than packing a simple punch to keep the listener coming back for more. Simple heaviness is not nearly enough in many cases, and that’s something that bands have been aware of for some time now with all sorts of different edges and approaches coming to the table to show us what can still be done in the right hands. Even today, it’s no question that many are seeking out their own paths through heaviness. Within their first full-length album, Warpstormer has to be considered one of the promising names to come out of the recent slew of names that have come out of the woodwork.

It is endlessly fascinating to be as to just how many different avenues one can take a single concept and simply run wild with all that it has to offer, and the current state of the underground has only added to such fervor. Whether you want your intensity to the maximum, with a slower pace, or utterly laced with immense psychedelia, there’s a band that has got your number. Bringing all of those and more into the fold, Warpstormer left nothing on the table in the crafting of their self-titled album. An opus that rarely lets up with the only reprieve in being the occasional space between the notes themselves, intensity in the name of the game here as Warpstormer thrusts us into the far future where the only light comes from their rebellion that’s overflowing with color and knows precisely what it’s doing. From the very beginning it’s made clear that this is a competent work whose strides are made with confidence and skill in this particular corner of what rock can be when infused with all sorts of inspiration from metal, and Warpstormer makes a damn good show of it at every turn. Taking more than a few cues from the realms of doom, thrash, and stoner-related madness, Warpstormer had quite a swirling cauldron before them as they crafted this record, yet it’s evident from the rich flavors and overwhelming aromas that surround this record that an imbalance of style and passion simply wasn’t an option for the likes of Warpstormer.

This is the kind of entry people are always looking out for. Sprawling in nature and downright enveloping in practically every given moment, the very notion of heaviness is done tremendous justice throughout these seven immense tracks as Warpstormer makes a superb foundation for future conquest. There’s surely much more to come from Warpstormer in the future, but it’s in the meantime that we have more than enough on our plate that has come with this excellent creation.
