It’s one thing to bring some semblance of out-of-the-box thinking to your material in order to bring a different feel to what you bring to the table, but it’s another thing altogether to virtually surrender yourself fully in that direction. Only the finest acts are able to handle such an unconventional approach the likes of which not many are able to pull off, yet it is those that do which see success in their onslaughts with further blood beyond the horizon. Having taken that aspect into consideration many times over throughout the course of its multiple creations, it’s with its latest effort that Thunraz takes that idea to its furthest extent to date.
While there is boundless potential within the confines of a style like industrial metal, there simply aren’t many out there that are able to bring together all the elements of such a sound and bring them all together with death metal to form an experience that is as scathing and unrelenting as it is jagged and oftentimes unpredictable. Thunraz has tapped into that industrial realm with its ever-shifting brand of metal a surprising foundation for such a union in intensity with the seven tracks of “Incineration Day” seeing it all come together in such a form that can be difficult to approach if you’re unsure how to go about such a seemingly simple act. Caustic to the touch and a creation that’s downright hostile from beginning to end and from top to bottom, Thunraz has had a busy release schedule yet never once does that mean the Estonian act is content with repeating itself in the name of raw production. Rather, “Incineration Day” sees Thunraz take on a form that boggles the corporeal mind to gaze upon. Fiery in nature but always more than capable of off-putting rhythms that lure you ever-deeper into the swirling miasma of chaos, death, uncertainty, and nihilism that’s at the center of the album, “Incineration Day” holds nothing back as it both seduces and violates the listener in ways that we simply don’t see in this form often throughout the underground.
Industrial in all the right ways and with more than enough death metal to keep us rooted in place whether it be out of fascination or fear, Thunraz has become quite an oddity even by the standards of the underground. There’s been much that the act has accomplished in its own personal crusade, and it’s with practically every facet of “Incineration Day” that we see that fight taken to great lengths with the results to match.
