It’s no new feat for the underground to throw fresh names our way. With potential unbound, it’s always a gamble as to what bands are going to climb the ladder or find themselves festering on the base of the underground itself which may or may not be a bad thing depending on a great many things. The arrival of a new name is always an interesting event as anything can be possible, but when the prospect of established talent comes to the table and shows us what can be, grandeur and glory of a dark nature can oftentimes be the case in the underground metal realms. With plenty of experience already in the bag from previous acts, it’s with everything that Obscureviolence brings forth in its debut album that we see such an event take an incredibly dark yet fruitful turn.

It’s one thing to stretch your legs and try something else in a different style with different people, but that doesn’t make it any easier given all the nuance and layers that come into play so that such a performance comes to life in exquisite magnificence. Having two-thirds of the band a part of the esteemed Horror God is already a plus by damn near every account, and it’s everyone involved within the fresh creation of Obscureviolence that everyone involved should be well aware of the magnitude at play here. A work that holds nothing back and forces you to stare into self-consuming madness the likes of which is constantly writhing and spewing bile of the worst sort, “Refuting the Flesh” is dramatic and monstrously intricate yet intense above all else. Visceral above all else but always having this mysterious air that penetrates every possible facet of what Obscureviolence dares to be, it’s a voracious blend of black-death metal that holds nothing back and beckons you ever deeper into the swirling nether that is on full display throughout this performance even if we know damn well this is but the first time Obscureviolence has pulled from such a miasma, yet this unit works with masterful proficiency in this devilish craft. Opening up beyond simple riffs and showcasing a dark efficiency that should chill anyone down to the core, “Refuting the Flesh” is a start that was born out of the very madness of the underground with nothing able to stand in the way of Obscureviolence as long as they have anything to say about it.

Situations like this are what the underground has been about since day one. A dark entity that leaves nothing on the table and has all the room in the world to grow into an existential beast that is sure to accomplish terrible acts should it continue down the path before it. Obscureviolence more than fits such a metaphor with everything gathered to bring “Refuting the Flesh” into existence nothing short of grand darkness in the making whose potency cannot be denied.
