Yatsu / Wanderer – split

It is one thing to be loud. It’s something else altogether to make your volume representative of something. Be it rage, catharsis, passion, or something in between, if you can make your volume mean something then it takes on a form of a completely different caliber with nothing short of immensity and depth to be found within those peaking sonic waves. Such creations can oftentimes feel few and far between for understandable reasons, yet there are few things that can compare to the raw nature of punk-infused justified fury. If it were coming from either Yatsu or Wanderer then we’d already have our hands full, but together? Now, we’re truly playing with fire.

A glance at the track listing of this split and I could understand if someone were left a little disappointed as they’re left wanting more than merely two tracks per act with a single track reaching beyond three minutes in length. However, to be aware of the quality in this particular corner of the underground is to be more than aware that less can very easily be a lot more. While there are two acts at play here, to gaze upon what they’ve accomplished together here very much feels like witnessing both moving together as a single cohesive unit of dominance that offers no reprieve to any who find themselves in the path of this duo with their aural dominance only matched by their aggressive nature. Even with both bands bringing their own distinct flavors to the mix, Yatsu with the intense powerviolence and Wanderer with a noise rock and death metal fusion with an injection of noise, it should be made exceedingly clear that each act plays off the other to devastating effect. Where many seek to just make a wall of sound that might be impressive at first, it ends up being disappointingly thin, unable to deliver. What we see here from Yatsu and Wanderer is anything but. True malicious intent from top to bottom without a shred of regret for what they have to do in order to get their message across, it’s in this split that we have an example of the underground coming together to light a blaze whose heat is simply overwhelming and whose shadows are dark and haunting for what’s to be found therein.

Individually, each of these acts have carved out their own paths in the underground littered with the bodies of those who have gotten in their way with the reputation of each act’s power more than preceding them. Coming together for a singularly monstrous performance, however, we bear witness to an atrocity of a different caliber altogether. An offensive the likes of which we can always use more of, this particular corner of the underground has nothing but two massive pillars of intensity between these two groups with this split all the proof one could ever need.
