While there are certainly bands out there that have really cornered the market when it comes to embodying all that the sound can be, there are always those that are carving out a path for themselves and doing a damn good job at it. Every style has a select few names like that which seem to defy expectation and constant surprise us. For black metal, Ungfell is undoubtedly such an act. Having been a rising name for four years now, it’s with their melodic and more than a little out-of-the-box approach to black metal that has always made the name one to respect and watch with time only seeming to fine tune the greatness the band has always demonstrated. Even so, it’s with their fourth album that Ungfell seems to tap into a different level altogether.

Ever since their first album, Ungfell has been a name to watch. Their brand of black metal has never been something to deny in any form whatsoever as the albums have piled on with every album appearing better than the previous in some form or another. For all that was brought to the table within their fourth opus of “De Ghörnt”, Ungfell’s mastery feels bonafide and undeniable with all that they’ve accomplished in these seven tracks of undisputable excellence. A singularly intoxicating experience that knows exactly how to grab you by the jugular and never once releases, this is the kind of black metal that brings people running as the call of the mountains is simply too irresistible for anyone to deny with it being downright fitting that Ungfell would be the one to deliver a compelling body of work like this. From top to bottom, “De Ghörnt” is a masterclass in what it means to offer up black metal that goes against the grain just enough to make peoples’ heads turn while always making sure to revere the pillars of the genre that we’ve all come to know intimately, and all that of that mixed with a tenacity, understanding, and grandeur that we simply do not get to witness on a common basis whatsoever. To look deep into any single track of what “De Ghörnt” has to offer and it should come exceedingly clear that this is almost certainly the last great stop for black metal in 2024.

While many come up to the plate of black metal to make some attempt at bringing something different to the table, few can do it as damned well as what Ungfell has done in the past with this particular outing something special. Excellence becomes synonymous with a band after a certain point, yet it’s with the whole of “De Ghörnt” that Ungfell taps into a deeper meaning for that concept.
