A simple look upon what technical death metal has achieved in just the last few years, and it should be extremely obvious that there’s still so much to be done in a sound as dynamic and overwhelming as this. As such, new names are still able to come around and deliver magnificence on a high level should they simply take the opportunity to seize that glory for themselves without becoming little more than a mirror reflection of their influences. Within what’s only their debut full-length album, Synaptic delivers that qualifying death metal on an undeniably high level.

In a genre like this, it is important to infuse your own flavors and personality into the mix. Otherwise, you easily run the risk of sounding dull, recycled, uninspired, or any combination of the three and beyond. Even just a little bit can go a long way if you know how to implement it right. A band’s debut can be the best place for them to experiment and fumble around in the dark understandably in order to find what they’re going for, yet it is here throughout the whole of the eight tracks within “Enter the Void” that Synaptic did not do any fumbling or searching whatsoever. Rather, it’s clear in damn near every moment that Synaptic throws down that this is a band that already knows precisely what they’re going for and exactly how to bring it to the table. A ferociously dynamic and unyielding performance that never once misses an opportunity to show us what can still be done in this sound, “Enter the Void” uses the whole of its 34-minute runtime to throw down a frenetic performance that holds nothing back nor leaves anything on the table as these passages of technicality are simply nothing to be denied. While there is still clear room for improvement, what Synaptic has accomplished here cannot be seen as anything short of a focused and successive excursion into a sound that many struggle to get a firm grip on.

Where many bands try to get a good grasp on what they can do in their first work, a band like Synaptic eventually comes around to demonstrate the mastery that is already at work from the get-go. Intensity and grandeur out of the gate, “Enter the Void” lays the groundwork of further offensives that are sure to be bigger and somehow more bombastic than what we see here. But make no mistake! What’s been thrown down here is nothing short of a bold entry into the genre that many bands strive to achieve but only the exceptional like Synaptic are able to rise above and capture splendor.
