Crown of Madness – Memories Fragmented

It’s far from any sort of secret nowadays that there is loads of excellence in the world of death metal. While there are always an abundance of names out there that can bring something to the table, it’s only a matter of time before a new name comes around that manages to feel fresh even if, technically, hardly anything new is brought to the table. The more dissonant reaches of the sound have seen a lot of repetition in recent times from tons of bands coming out of practically nowhere to offer their hand to a mix that doesn’t need much tampering so long as it’s simply given the right approach. Having put out a few EPs in the lead-up to their first full-length album, Crown of Madness embodies all what it means to deliver on that promise in more than one way.

Like many of the solid releases that this particular corner of death metal has become known for, it’s all in how you execute things. The right mindset and approach can make a massive difference even if you approach it from even a slightly different angle with a small difference ensuring a wildly different album when everything is said and done. As such, when a band gets it right we simply must hail it for all that it is. In no small form, what Crown of Madness has demonstrated throughout “Memories Fragmented” is more than deserving of such a hail! A ten-track ripper that holds nothing back and dips its toe into the more technical end of death metal in more than one instance, Crown of Madness taps into what makes this corner of death metal something to behold as the act quickly proves to be more than a mere sum of its influences. A constantly writhing creation that rarely yields unless it’s in an attempt to tempt the listener deeper into the swirling whirlpool of eldritch insanity that Crown of Madness commands with aptitude, this is a confident step forward for the band in more ways than one. The exact sort of intensity that one would expect from dissonant death metal while ensuring that their own personal flavors come across in a potent cauldron that has so much going on within, “Memories Fragmented” takes on a life of its own that is sure to become the launching point for an offensive of mouth-foaming fury that only the insane know ever so intimately.

“Memories Fragmented” is the first pillar for a body of work that, as it seems to be currently, will stand out from much of the competition and culminate in a structure that’s simply imposing from base to peak. A style like this has always been cutthroat for those who dare to bring it to life with few able to come forward and really deliver something worthy of great attention. Right from the beginning, Crown of Madness is a name that deserves such a treatment.

“Memories Fragmented” releases on February 24th via Transcending Obscurity Records!
