I don’t know about you, but there are few things to me as interesting in the whole of the underground as witnessing a band rise out of nothingness that’s able to throw down captivating metal on such a high level that catches us off-guard the moment we plunge into the given material. Such finds have always made up the very backbone of the global underground with names like Burning Sanctum consistently at the forefront with their talent. Despite only getting started a year ago, it’s with their second EP that the Canadian act demonstrates a grand level of heaviness that’s begging for a cult following.

While there are those throughout the dense doom, sludge, stoner, etc. scenes that like to throw around the claim that there just isn’t much out in the underground that’s interesting in some form or another, I cannot help but scoff at such claims whenever I stumble upon an act like Burning Sanctum. This is the kind of band that embodies some of the very best aspects of the sound at hand that many seek to tap into with only the finest and most dedicated students of the genre are able to bring to life in such exquisite form. In just three tracks, Burning Sanctum does that and somehow a little bit more with all that’s gone into “Eternal Acquisition of Souls”. A patient but nonetheless heavy creation that truly thrives in the haunting mist in the heart of the woods where chants emanate from, the occult splendor with which Burning Sanctum deals exlusively in throughout this EP is of the sort that many crave for throughout the underground even as plenty of other acts tirelessly put forth similar creations with exceptional acts seeming to be only ones that are able to make it a true sight to behold. Without a shred of doubt, Burning Sanctum is such an act.

“Eternal Acquisition of Souls” is a gripping working whose heaviness is the driving force behind their intensity while the tropes of this corner of doom metal are the enhancing flavors that are added brilliantly to an already-magnificent blend that’s nothing to deny for all that it dares to be. Where many seek greatness and can have struggles trying to get a firm grip upon it, the promising trio of Burning Sanctum demonstrates capacity and wonder of a kind that’s simply rare to gaze upon.
