Have you ever laid your eyes on something, told yourself that you would absolutely come back to that, and then fail to do so? It happens to me far more often that I would like to admit, and sometimes it has truly tragic consequences further down the line. Time after time throughout 2024, the name Slimelord continuously come before me. Yet, my forgetfulness continuously got the better of me. Now, barely a week into 2025 and I finally now find myself investigating the name. Now, I find myself wishing I had come to it several months earlier.

This is one of those works that words can barely do it justice. For months have I heard talk here and there about what Slimelord accomplished in their first full-length album, and it truly is one of those creations that you have to properly lose yourself within in order to know what can be done throughout the seven chaotic tracks that “Chytridiomycosis Relinquished” boasts in no small way. While hard to compare to many others in the underground, Slimelord manages to take wild, winding, and more than a little experimental death metal that more than stands out from the crowd such that anybody who didn’t involve this record as one of the year’s finest creations (like myself) should rectify such a mistake immediately. Where unpredictable death metal can sometimes fall apart in the hands of those overwhelmed by the task that they have put before themselves, it’s at every given turn that “Chytridiomycosis Relinquished” is not given anything less than the highest level of care and attention to ensure that the album evolves into the otherworldly beast that defies the rules of reality which it was always meant to be. Slimelord has slowly but surely been rising through the dense darkness of the underground over the years, and it is singularly with this creation that they’ve not only established themselves as an act that demands to be paid attention to but one that has earned our respect many times over.

If I would’ve fallen into this record sooner, I am downright positive that it would’ve easily made the final selection as one of my favorites from 2024. Yet, here I am, too late for such an inclusion, but the power of Slimelord is still overwhelming in even its smallest moments. Unyielding death metal that taps into the potential of many different styles to make for a truly caustic and hypnotizing creation that truly stands out from the competition, “Chytridiomycosis Relinquished” is hands down a creation of extremity that must be investigated and given the reverence it deserves.
