Nolla – Graniittisutra

The sheer landscape of psychedelic rock is something that cannot be denied. A swirling realm that rarely seems to tread the same ground twice even amongst legions of different acts and with more than enough for everybody to find something to enjoy should they simply put in the leg work to find it, it can certainly be argued that the scene as a whole is in a tremendous state with naught but talent and imagination fraught wherever you look. For some, the mastery comes more naturally than others in such a form that feels nigh on captivating to bear witness to. From top to bottom, Nolla seems to be such an act with this release something that scratches an itch that’s hard to put into words.

Quality over quantity, as they say. I cannot even begin to think of how many times I’ve come upon a work of any sound, saw that there were but a handful of tracks in the work, and was beyond curious to see if the band in question was able to make the switch of having more material for the material they do throw down being quite flavorful. In no small way, it’s all that was accomplished within “Graniittisutra” that Nolla demonstrates grandeur of a kind we see rarely. Three distinct tracks across an expansive 27-minute runtime, this is the kind of aimless exploration in space that many come to this corner of psychedelia for in order to be given riffs, trance-inducing atmospheres, and wonder of a like that is simply hypnotizing. More than capable of bringing from the stars a performance overflowing with melody while showing the capacity to tap into jazz for some really interesting flavors and then more than a little bit of improv to inject their own ingredients into an already-impressive pot, Nolla laid forth much of their repertoire to bring “Graniittisutra” to life with results that are simply magnificent. It’s clear in practically every given minute of this performance that Nolla knows what they’re doing on an intimate level that cannot be understated lest you miss out on some of the finest aspects of this wondrous journey.

Where psychedelia, mastery, and daring intersect, only the finest in this genre can thrive and deliver material that can only be considered monumental from end to end. While far from the largest name that this sprawling genre has seen in recent years, Nolla is one that should not be ignored for any reason. Already proven to be a driven band given the other record it released last year, it’s with everything that was brought to the table with “Graniittisutra” that should immediately earn the respect of any curious psychonaut who would come before their splendor.
