Not often enough do we see a band capitalize on what it means to be a sludgy yet atmospheric creation that takes into account much of what both sounds can become when placed in the right hands. Sure, we are able to bear witness to a name like Cult of Luna every few years, but there’s so much room for new blood to make itself known and show us what can be! In such a realm, it’s only a matter of time before a name finally comes along that shows us how to do it with real finesse and power of a sorts that simply cannot be denied. Having made their impact known for years now, it’s with all they deliver in their latest EP that Obscure Sphinx steps up to the plate that few dare to approach with overwhelming victory the only result.
It can be exceedingly difficult to make your impact known in a handful of tracks, especially in a sound where people tend to expect loads of power stretched out across vast expanses of intensity to show us sights that other styles rarely touch upon if at all. Yet, all it takes is the right move from the right hand to make it work in spectacular fashion such that you have no choice but to come back over and over again to lose yourself in all that the work has to offer. In no small way, Obscure Sphinx achieved that and so much more with all that they delivered within the three tracks of “Emovere”. An evocative and dense creation that burrows under your skin immediately to set fire to your blood and ignite the flames of passion locked within the depths of the soul, it’s in every movement that Obscure Sphinx makes that we’re able to see what it means for a rising act to deliver the goods in nothing less in hand than mass intrigue and undeniable power. Additionally armed with a set of vocals that are as haunting gorgeous as they are undeniably powerful, “Emovere” is as layered as it is rich in flavor. Dynamic and simply invigorating from top to bottom, “Emovere” is what it means to flex your musical muscles, offer no reprieve for those caught in the blast of your fury, and demonstrate an understanding of your craft that is deep and irrefutable.
Where sheer weight and intensity meet raw beauty and captivation, Obscure Sphinx stands strong against much of the competition. This is a name that has been rising the ranks for years now with more than enough solid performances to earn the band plenty of accolades, yet it is my firm belief that in only three tracks that “Emovere” stands as some of the band’s best work to date.
