Unbounded Terror – Something is Rotten in Humanity

Despite how widespread death metal has become over the decades, there are certain place that seem to be hailed far more often than others. Places like Finland and Sweden oftentimes get much of the spotlight, and rightfully so, but there are more bastions of intensity out there than what I think many give the world credit for. Having made cultivated an underground the likes of which is always worthy of mention, Spain boasts a lengthy history in extreme metal but doesn’t get time in the spotlight often enough. Even into today, the country manages to deliver on a level that deserves recognition with the arrival of the fourth full-length from Unbounded Terror a perfect reason to take up that conversation again.

It can sometimes feel as though bands like this are a commodity in certain corner of metal. Having put out one record in the 90s and then some demos before going dark for almost twenty years until 2019, Unbounded Terror sets itself apart amongst bands that have accomplished relatively the same thing by delivering quality and finesse on a level that makes for a true marvel of intensity the likes of which many seek to channel from the old school of death metal but rarely achieve. A true whirlwind of bone and undeath on an undeniable scale that leaves one flatten and emulsified before such raw power, “Something is Rotten in Humanity” is the overwhelming and intoxicating slab of death metal that is precisely what many are constantly salivating for. Harbingers of captivating riffage and never once missing an opportunity to deliver sweet torture upon the willing listener, Unbounded Terror are clear masters of their craft as they have spent the last five years not sitting idly in order to become the face of what Spanish death metal can really be for all that it has to offer. This is what happens when real masters toil away at their work trying to achieve greatness of an ilk that impresses all of those who come before it, and I know damn well trhat it’s with every given facet of this performance that Unbounded Terror does that and more. Devious and no less than addicting thanks to all of its dark nuance, “Something is Rotten in Humanity” delivers on practically every level.

Straightforward and outright devilish in all that it dares to summon, all that’s done within “Something is Rotten in Humanity” gives immense credence to the title and the greater scene in order to remind us that bands like Unbounded Terror are not to be ignored lest we miss out on some prime death metal the likes of which are simply delectable. Spain’s scene deserves much more attention, and Unbounded Terror is are the forefront of such an offensive with the power to match.
