Orme – No Serpents, No Saviours

While it’s from the realm of doom that metal is often given a fantastic name, it’s when we take things a step further and venture into the realm of drone that we bear witness to sights that metal seldom witness given that not many tread those hills and discover what’s to be had. Where the scope of things truly open up to a monolithic expanse and a little bit of patience can go an exceedingly long way, drone can be a place that’s as fascinating to lose yourself in as much as it can be intimidating to approach. It’s been far too long since I’ve succumbed to the sound’s depths, and it’s with the latest from Orme that I find a deep itch finally satisfied beyond comprehension.

Well and truly, this is an EP that goes against the grain in more than a few ways. Namely, a simple glance at the single track that adorns “No Serpents, No Saviours” should be more than enough to show anybody that this 24-minute work is anything but typical as Orme puts forth a performance that is exceedingly niche in the world of metal and something that not many are able to pull off. Yet, Orme does in magnificent fashion. An expansive creation that pulls from greatly from drone while ensuring doom and death metal have parts to play, the sky itself is torn asunder and the universe reels before such raw power that “No Serpents, No Saviours” boasts in no small form with the drawn-out riffs and immeasurably patient approach holding great nuance between its notes should you simply lose yourself into the psychedelic realm that Orme commands with absolute impunity. While tackling concepts of faith and the silence that follows one as they crawl down the grueling path of understanding through suffering, Orme remains constant for its heaviness and magnitude with everything coming together slowly but surely to make for a wide performance that holds nothing back as worlds come crashing together. The mind itself tears open in an effort to make one understand all that can be with “No Serpents, No Saviours” offering little reprieve and true salvation for those that enter its halls.

This is what happens when one dares in a way that feels nothing short of devilishly methodical. Taking its time with always making damn sure to hone in on the smallest moments to make the wild bursts outward all the more monolithic in scope, Orme is an act that the underground can always use more of for all that it brings to the table. Despite being a relatively brief performance, it cannot be said that “No Serpents, No Saviours” doesn’t defy expectations as it brings forth a notion of being so small before something so grand that one’s knees cannot help but buckle before such a sight.
