Venomous Echoes – Dysmor

Every so often, we’re given an album that knows not how to stay within the confines of reality as we know. It’s in the more experimental reaches of the sound that such sights become more commonplace even if they are still few and far between, and there are always a few names out there that are more than willing to tear open the fabric of reality itself to show us what sights there are still to be had even if they drive us mad in the process. It was last year that Venomous Echoes sought to do that and more with its second album, and it’s here with its third that the act taps into something else of a higher caliber despite what had already been achieved.

Cosmic horror opens up many doors for those that are brave enough to explore where those halls lead, and it’s something that metal doesn’t tap into often enough outside of a Lovecraftian mindset with even fewer delivering it all in such a capacity that delivers on such a prospect. It was last year that Venomous Echoes tapped into that power quite well, but it is single-handedly with everything that was summoned from nothingness within the whole of “Dysmor” that we see cosmic horror brought front and center for all that it has to offer without so much as a shred of mercy, light, or hope to be found on the other side of this absolutely eviscerating release. Always winding within its own passages and consistently delivering an onslaught of insanity that only the likes of well-crafted death-black metal can bring about, it would be a voracious understatement for anyone to claim that this is not just the most mature work from Venomous Echoes to date but the most imposing piece from top to bottom. Nobody is safe throughout the entirety of these forty-seven minutes to not just make the album something to be feared, but something that demands exploration lest you miss out on some of the most captivating moments that “Dysmor” has to offer even the cost of such knowledge is crippling madness beyond comprehension. Knowledge is power which comes at a high cost, and Venomous Echoes is eternally more than eager to collect for those unwittingly agreeing to such a steep price.

Having already made a surprising leap in its sound in barely a year, Venomous Echoes is quickly making itself known as a true embodiment of madness that is not to be taken lightly. Much like the works from bands along the same lines as Portal, what’s accomplished within “Dysmor” is nothing short of a mind-shattering experience that takes black-death metal to a terrifying extent that never once ceases as merely delivering a sonic performance that one can get lost within. Rather, this work is never satisfied until the only thing left in the end is complete annihilation, and it is even then that the hunger still persists.
