Retromorphosis – Psalmus Mortis

A resurrection that defies the odds and shows us what can happen when the phoenix rises in all of its magnificence – that’s what metalheads are constantly hoping against hope for. While we find ourselves lucky to still be surrounded by many names that have persevered for decades on end, we simply cannot help ourselves from praying against reason that past favorites that have long thrown in the towel would return to us so that we can bask in their glory yet again. Technical death metal is no stranger to such longing with names like Necrophagist and Spawn of Possession constantly thrown around when people are looking for a pillar of the past to hold on to despite the extremely low odds of a return. And yet, the latter has returned to us reincarnated with much of the same line-up to offer us a work that should bring a tear to any decades-long fan of the genre.

While still having many of the same strands that its predecessor has become known for, it demands to be made clear in damn near every sense that Retromorphosis is the next step in the evolution of what these guys threw down in those fateful albums years ago, allowing the past to retain its well-earned status while simultaneously enabling this new name to prosper in a way that it can effortlessly stand on its own two legs. Without a shred of hesitation nor compromise in any of its eight tracks, “Psalmus Mortis” is more than worthy of being called one of the most intense works of technical death metal that 2025 is sure to see for some time with each minute offering credence to such a bold claim. A supremely writhing creation that holds nothing back in its songwriting while always ensuring space for contrast in pulling back and showing a different side to their darkness that technical death metal often strives to achieve but rarely accomplishes, what Retromorphosis does throughout this release is demonstrate mastery unyielding. To be expected but nonetheless a supremely welcome sight to behold, all that is “Psalmus Mortis” feels all but fitting for the momentous arrival of Retromorphosis that truly has everything going for it from its reputation to the factor of raw talent that permeates every given facet of the act.

The sort of mastery this genre is always waiting for, it’s only fitting that the return of pivotal masters would be the event that delivers such grandeur. Persistently winding down dark halls and carving out a path for its own sound that evolves past what people would surely initially expect, what Retromorphosis captures within “Psalmus Mortis” cannot be regarded as anything less than greatness of an overwhelming magnitude.

“Psalmus Mortis” releases on February 21st via Season of Mist!
