The very fringes of what metal can still become is something where truly anything feels possible. As long as an act has an imagination and the capacity to bring it to life, it can oftentimes be the case that there are names out there in vast obscurity that are tapping into sounds and notions that we just don’t see often whatsoever purely because of how weird and outside-of-the-box they are even in their most accessible moments. Every now and then, however, there’s always at least one at that manages to peek through the murkiness to deliver material that can really grab our attention with the power to do it across multiple efforts. Hands down, Sarmat is quickly becoming such an oddity.
Just to be aware of what Sarmat dares to be is to be intimately aware of what happens when artistic vision is never put down. Allowed to run wild and take on whatever form it may with nothing hindering its winding paths as such an evocative, intense, and seemingly random sound, Sarmat’s particular brand of immeasurably progressive death metal has already given the act quite a reputation as one to keep a sharp eye should you want to witness death metal in some of its most unconventional forms. Even in what’s only a pair of tracks like what’s to be seen within the forthcoming EP, “Upgrade”, Sarmat holds true to its values and blends death metal with all sorts of different styles to make for a performance that stands out in damn near every way. An impressive display of craftsmanship that sees the reimagining of classic works that become seamlessly intertwined with the fresh material from Sarmat to make the EP a look back to what’s already been done while still charging forward into bold new territory, this is what it means to make a sound wholly your own for all that it can be in every uncompromising aspect. “Upgrade” is singularly dense and intimidating at a first glance, but to fall into this work is to hurl yourself into a form of death metal that doesn’t see the light of day often whatsoever.
Whatever is to come next from Sarmat, this is a work that demonstrates the exact kind of intensity that we’re dealing with here even if it is barely over twenty minutes in length. However, it goes without saying that Sarmat achieves much within the writhing confines of “Upgrade” without a shadow of doubt to further cement the name as a truly anomaly of death metal that has much more to do and say before all is said and done.
