The dichotomy of the human consciousness is something that we still grapple with today in great detail. Dissecting what it means to strive to be a good person and help those around us while simultaneously suppressing the negative intrusive thoughts that we’re constantly plagued by, metal can be a magnificent medium to explore such themes in harrowing detail that really leaves an impact on your psyche and makes you really wonder. It’s not terribly often that we see an act tackle such themes and pull it off, but it’s every now and then that we see a creation that defies expectations. With their newest effort, Bleeth does just that.
A subject like this is an immensely tricky thing. Even just trying to bring such concepts to life can easily separate the daring from the truly bold in the underground with successors attaining a level of inner understanding and artistic vision that can rarely be understated for all that is summoned within a creation. Witnessing Bleeth do so, one cannot help but feel as though you’re in the presence of something greater than yourself in virtually every form. A constantly writhing performance that shifts back and forth from the light and the dark the plagues the human mind on a daily basis in a struggle that only death can only seem to cease once and for all, “Marionette” is a raw yet immensely calculated effort. It seeks to plunge a superbly sharp blade into your very soul while remaining reverential to your own struggle because Bleeth understands it on an intimate level. Persistent in its riffs and never once shying away from ripping the proverbial scab off such that what’s left before us is a raw display that’s gnarly and undeniably effective in its imagery, Bleeth may excel in their longer tracks in my eyes, but it’s in the vicious bouts that aren’t even three minutes long that Bleeth’s personal brand of post metal manages to deliver diversity and personality in absolute heaps.
Devastating in all the right places, Bleeth never pulls a punch nor do they miss an opportunity to cut deep into the flesh and spirit to make for a lasting performance that capitalizes greatly on such an overwhelming level. A supreme work of post metal that dares to be more, “Marionette” is a bold performance that always delivers in damn near every aspect.
