It can oftentimes be the most literal approach that can bear the most delicious fruit, but it’s not always the most obvious solution. As we find ourselves in a state of the underground where there’s so much nuance and innovation, it can easily be the case that many miss some of the most obvious creations through no fault of their own. These aren’t resolutions that shake the foundations of the given sound, but they open up a path that some may have missed simply because they never thought to look there. With a brand of death-doom that takes the two sounds very literally and simply such that the ensuing work covers the ground of both styles superbly, Dead Chasm lays the foundation for future greatness in their forthcoming EP.
In a sound that’s as popular and well-explored as death-doom, it is effortless to make the claim that there isn’t any wiggle room to do anything that feels new with the very concept of “new” itself something that many musicians constantly grapple with. Even slightly different can feel new for any number of reasons. What Dead Chasm has brought to the table in what seems like a scant EP of only three tracks across not even a thirteen-minute runtime is by no means whatsoever such a brilliant idea that it rattles death-doom to its core, but it is in its barebones approach that “Spectral Tyranny” taps into a part of the sound that we just don’t get often. Creating a clear divide between the death metal and doom aspects of the sound, it’s in this EP that we get an experience that’s reverential to both sides of the coin that death-doom constantly inhabits. Unyielding in its barrage of intensity that’s fast-paced and overwhelming while always making time for expansive dirges that grind your bones to dust and make damn sure that there is nothing but darkness when “Spectral Tyranny” is all said and done, there’s certainly something interesting going on within these three tracks. It’s fantastically simple and utterly deadly in its execution.
With a clear understanding of both aspects of their sound, Dead Chasm wastes no time and never misses an opportunity to show off their immense proficiency. “Spectral Tyranny” may seem like a work that doesn’t have much to it, but with everything that goes on within the EP, it’s clear that Dead Chasm can do much and go quite far with an approach that many are wont to not even realize it exists in the first place.
