The sheer darkness of the most obscure and menacing corners of the underground are not something that are to be easily underestimated lest you find yourself swallowed whole by the very madness you sought to avoid. It’s a corner of the metal spectrum that many have tried to tap into in some form or another, but successful acts that are truly able to embody the insanity while making a cohesive performance that holds up past a single listen are few and far between. As such, those that do accomplish such dark glory stand out. Having been six years since their last full-length, Teitanblood is a name we have been sorely missing as their brand of chaos was something that always stood out. Now, with their fourth full-length effort, Teitanblood moves with its most unhinged work yet.

I don’t know about you, but for me, the particularly blasphemous and unyielding realm of black-death metal has never been the same since the departure of Triumvir Foul. I still find myself greatly upset that such a band has left us, and I have been looking for a name to replace that void to no avail. Yet, it is tonight that I realize my foolishness, for it is in Teitanblood that the answer has long been right in front of my face with the harrowing madness of “From the Visceral Abyss” all the proof I could have asked for. Singular in its intensity yet all-encompassing in its horrific tentacles that stretch beyond the horizon, it’s almost a relief to witness the return of Teitanblood for there just aren’t many that can deliver what this unit can. Digging into a realm of their sound that is somehow more primal and caustic than what they’re already thrown down before, it is in every given instance throughout “From the Visceral Abyss” that we see an offensive upon the notion of light itself in the universe. Carnivorous and never once missing an opportunity to get under the listener’s skin, seethe with real menace, and then burst forth in a grotesque display of violence that’s as effective as it is terrifying, the entire style is given immense justice throughout the whole of this performance in a way that only bands on another level like Teitanblood can deliver.

Reminding us of what has come before but always carving out a path for itself, the raw fury of “From the Visceral Abyss” is not something to be taken lightly. This is insanity incarnate with no room for even the tiniest shred of compromise, hope, or relent to be had throughout the entirety of these seven utterly voracious tracks. Teitanblood is finally back and the heavens quake in response!
