The dead shall rise again. Where many see only an end, there are those that see new beginnings. The tenacity of the underground and those who inhabit its depths have long propelled the seething hellscape to new horizons of blasphemy and dark excellence with even the death of an act something that’s necessary for a name to rise from that corpse and put forth a display of power that cannot be denied. When the end of Cerebral Rot came upon us, it was many who thought it was a definitive end, yet it’s with a spiritual resurrection under the guise of Corpus Offal that we get a continuation that feels natural, well-built, and unapologetically evil to the core.
It’s all too tempting to compare a follow-up act to its predecessor, and that proves to be no different here. What Cerebral Rot accomplished is to be celebrated, for sure, but to act as though Corpus Offal is not deserving of being given the same level of respect and expectations that the name can stand on its own feet with its own credentials would be to spit upon what’s at play here. And to do so would encourage the primal wrath that Corpus Offal already displays to great lengths within its first full-length album. A singularly murderous work that holds nothing back, seeks naught but flesh and bone to be sundered, and the screaming of those pathetic souls caught in the path of such overwhelming destruction, here we’re given a beast of a record whose bloodlust can never truly be sated. The only thing that matches its intensity is the sheer craftsmanship that’s at work here. Constantly writhing in its own fury that’s as horrific as it is viciously effective, Corpus Offal’s tools of trade that is flesh are deadly right from the beginning and never once miss their mark. Whether it be in the form of winding rhythms, powerful onslaughts that seek blood-drenched soil, or the sheer silence after suffering your annoyingly foolish cries for help that will never arrive, the realm of Corpus Offal can be likened to a slaughterhouse: clear in its mission with nothing standing in the way of such an efficient, terrifying craft. As to the purpose of such a terrifying place? Corpus Offal’s bloodlust and undeniable prowess in anything and everything related to spreading death unbound.
Taking their own path after what could have easily been the end of a road, Corpus Offal rises above to show us their devastating craft in what it can already become. Deeply talented musicians are at play within this deeply disturbed craft, and it would be putting it mildly at best to say that they hit the nail right on the fucking head at every given instance throughout this release. Where death metal has loads of potential for those that approach it from the right angle, it is here that Corpus Offal stakes its claim as one of the newest names that we must heed lest we miss one of the most terrifying and captivating displays of unholy power in recent times.
