Fryktelig Støy- Incandescent

While it’s oftentimes the case that metal takes its rage, frustration, and woe and puts it into an outward expression that’s pressed onto others, there has always been more than enough room for those that seek to take their focus inward. Connecting with the self can be an exceedingly difficult task for many with an array of themes from depression to suicide to rediscovery just the tip of the spear when it comes to concepts that such an approach can deliver. In the right hands, such a journey stands out and becomes a work that demands to be experienced. Standing firmly in the realm of black-doom while consistently spreading out in all directions, Fryktelig Støy defies expectations with its forthcoming album.

When we’re dealing with a work that approaches the themes with true sincerity, it can be all too easy for the act in question to allow something to slip through its fingers given everything that it’s trying to wrangle into one massive cauldron at the same time. Small notions lost here or a slightly undercooked delivery there. Yet, it’s after becoming lost within the harrowing realm of “Incandescent” for days on end that I cannot help but feel as though Fryktelig Støy has put forth a display of prowess and magnificence that’s as captivating to see with all senses opened wide as it was punishing to experience in such full capacity. Intense in its contemplations that venture deep into the very concepts of motherhood, self-discovery, grief, and betrayal, “Incandescent” is undeniably powerful. It’s cloaked in a thick tapestry of blackened doom while constantly pulling from other genres to make the contrasting moments all the more powerful, captivating, and immersive such that you feel everything from fleeting hope to the deepest despair as Fryktelig Støy displays in fascinating detail. Caustic to the touch yet with an unexpectedly warm center that’s always beckoning you to venture ever further into the work, what’s done here sees the cycles of light and dark, death and life, love and hate spin around wildly to make for a compelling experience whose incredibly dense layers can hardly be done justice through words.

Without exception, this is an album that demands to be understood firsthand in order to truly come face-to-face with what’s at work throughout the entirety of the album. A journey undertaken by a single woman, Fryktelig Støy should be immensely proud of the otherworldly demonstrations that are to be found in every inch of the darkness which “Incandescent” inhabits.
