A what point does a band call it a day and throw in the towel? The answer to such a question varies greatly from one person to the next as it can be one of any number of reasons that one might have to qualify for a band to move on in some form or another if not ending everything right on the spot. The departure of a significant portion of any band is more than enough for plenty to end things and move on, yet some names just don’t want to die. Whether it’s out of raw tenacity or the feeling that the name still has power yet to give, there are those that find ways to persevere. It’s been six years since the last outing from Eschaton, and things could’ve easily ended. Yet, it’s with the arrival of a fresh line-up and plenty of power behind every instrument that Eschaton enters a bold new era.
It is one thing to want to return with enough power and prowess to make any doubts fade away when it comes to the notion of your act turning to dust, yet it is another thing altogether to come back with enough firepower to raze civilizations and level entire continents in an overgrowth of metal and terror the likes of which are truly apocalyptic. To look at any one of the musicians that contributed to the overwhelming presence of “Techtalitarian” is to realize that we’re dealing with a unit of technical death metal royalty that have the power to shift the very nature of the sound to their desire should they wish it. This album is simply monolithic. There isn’t so much as a moment of reprieve throughout the entirety of these ten tracks with Eschaton always putting forth a constant onslaught of unparalleled aggression and undeniable prowess in each instrument as is to be expected from each of these guys given what they’ve already accomplished for the genre as a whole, and it is a true wonder to watch them work as a single cohesive unit. Far more than devastating in concept and a representation of what technical death metal can be at its flashiest yet still nigh on effective, “Techtalitarian” leaves nothing to chance. No survivors. No flesh left unscarred. No one left to defy the very will of Eschaton. “Techtalitarian” blots out the very sun with its all-consuming technological prowess, and Eschaton thrives in the artificial darkness.
While there are plenty of those that think the world of technical death metal has lost much of its luster for one reason or another, there’s always something in the shadows waiting to rise and seize the opportunity to not just catch those very people unaware but prove how wrong they truly are. Eschaton could have taken any path it wanted during the creation of this record, yet it is with every given facet of “Techtalitarian” that we’re given an absolute unit of an act that has the power to redefine what it means to deliver quality technical death metal.
