If we were to take into consideration the number of bands out there that have made their impact upon the ever-growing landscape of technical death metal, it would quite the lengthy list. The genre has seen tons of different names come around in just the past decade with loads of different approaches, ideas, and minds taking a crack at a sound that’s known for its immense complexity, yet there are not as many as impactful or influential as that of Allegaeon. Having long been regarded as a need-to-know name in the genre, this is an act that is always pushing the envelope in their own way. It’s given them quite a reputation, and it’s with their forthcoming seventh album.

Sometimes, you have to go backwards in order to move forward. That’s not always something that one may consider when thinking about a sound that’s as dense and lively as something as technical death metal, yet it is an occasional truth that even the most veteran of acts grapple with in order to find themselves in a different place in some form or another. With the rejoining of the band’s original vocalist, Allegaeon finds itself in a new era whether it wanted to be or not. Yet even just a minute into any of these ten tracks should quickly make one realize that this is a name whose tenacity is highly revered for a reason. Pound for pound, “The Ossuary Lens” does more than just live up to its predecessors; it’s a bold new chapter for Allegaeon. A singularly awe-inspiring creation that sees this titanic act pull from every bit of strength that they’ve ever had to offer; this is a work centered around themes of death that are as filled with darkness as they are brimming with light. Thrilling right from the beginning and undeniably satisfying in virtually every given moment, it’s the entirety of “The Ossuary Lens” that Allegaeon should be more than pleased with itself. This is an act that has refused to sit still no matter what has been thrown their way with every challenge overcome in stupendous fashion, and that proved to be no different here.

Allegaeon has long embodied what it means to remain true to yourself yet never stagnate. Everything about this album holds true to that ideal in the most captivating fashion. Surely, this is an album that’s going to stand as a highlight in an already grand discography.
