It goes without saying that every style out there has a number of reliable names that we can rely on to keep things interesting at the very least. Metal has never been the exception to that rule. No matter what we’re dealing in, it is truly a given that some acts are constant and consistent on a level that more than warrants loyalty as the years go on and excitement almost whenever a new effort is announced. Doom and sludge have loads of options to choose from with Conan being one of the best examples of such. With their seventh album, Conan demonstrates in stupendous fashion why that has always been the case and why it will continue to be so.

There are any number of different factors that go into one’s expectations of what any given album might sound like. Whether it’s in its heaviness, production value, or the direction the band might take, everything comes with a certain level of expectation when we’re dealing with a band like Conan. Fortunately for us, this is the kind of act that’s as consistent as it is intense. Long has Conan been synonymous with overwhelming, bone-crushing power that holds nothing back with “Violence Dimension” far from any different. Taking its name very seriously and offering no sort of reprieve for its cultists that find themselves in the midst of a cosmic meat grinder, it can very well be argued that this is the most unforgiving work from Conan to date. A lengthy double LP that clocks in just shy of an hour with its droning bonus track, “Violence Dimension” is as unforgiving as it is sprawling! There isn’t so much as a minute of this record that isn’t specifically designed to pummel you into dust and a fine red mist with the power of the riff having complete control over what the listener is subjected to throughout the record’s entirety. They very universe is cracked open and the cosmos wheels at the beck and call of Conan whose awesome strength has yet to wane with time with “Violence Dimension” all the proof that one could ask for. It’s a relatively simple record but nonetheless immeasurably potent and knows precisely how to achieve its goals with terrifying efficiency; it’s Conan doing what they’ve always done best.

A work like this is a real no-brainer to become addicted to. Unapologetically heavy in practically every given moment and never once relaxing their grip upon your throat, Conan more than lives up to its reputation at each turn. The continuation of an offensive that seeks planets torn asunder and the human soul snuffed from existence, the sheer might of “Violence Dimension” is not to be underestimated lest you be wholly swallowed by the power Conan wields with absolute impunity and terrific mastery.
