It is more than natural for any given band to want to expand their sound in one form or another, but then the question always remains: where do you take it? The more straightforward act seeks to become more proficient in their craft with the exact approach to that varying wildly from one name to the next. However, it is the acts that seek to do something different, even if only slightly so, that manage to stand out and show people what they can do. From the Ages has but two releases to call their own before this third effort, but it is clear from even just glancing at the track listing that this is a creation that sees the largely instrumental trio tackle a new challenge.
By no means is it a stretch of the imagination to see an instrumental act, particularly one that deals in psychedelia, to provide longer form content, but that doesn’t mean everyone can deliver it at a high level and everybody has got to start somewhere, after all. From the Ages has been dabbling in that concept in their two previous EPs with songs that have a good deal of length to them, but it is within “III” that we see that concept taken to new lengths, intentionally or not. This work crosses well past thirty minutes in total, but it is the bulk of that which resides in a single track that clocks over twenty-five minutes to make for a work that clearly challenged From the Ages as psychedelic craftsmen. To say that they succeeded would be to put it mildly. With the combination of both tracks, “III” offers a hell of a ride with From the Ages very competently at the wheel, showing us grand sights beyond the physical plane where the laws of the universe fold in on themselves if not are thrown out entirely. Riff-driven but always ready to showcase a blend that I can only deem as quite progressive with nothing seeming to be off the table in terms of approach or execution, what we have here is an EP with loads of potential that never once misses its mark. Enthralling and a downright interesting blend right out of the gate with a tremendously satisfying ending, From the Ages really went for it with “III” and exceeded any and all expectations.
Truly, it is a privilege to watch bands grow and evolve as time goes on. Seeing where these bands take their sound always keeps things fresh and interesting with names like From the Ages standing as bulwarks between us and a sound that could effortlessly become stale in less capable hands. “III” is the end-result of being constant in your craft with From the Ages a prime example of what it means to be consistent yet always challenging yourself to do new things in your sound.
