There are some things that just feel like they’re meant to be. In the world of modern metal, there are just so many possibilities that can come about from the smallest tweaking of a long-executed formula that can make for an entirely different performance, and that’s just part of what has always made the very floor of the underground such a fascinating thing to behold. From bands trying their own thing to others carving out a name for themselves by pulling off a sound that we’re entirely familiar with. The latter can be quite tricky as you don’t want to simply sound like another act lest your material feel uninspired or lifeless in some instances. If you approach things like what Samiarus did in their debut, then glory is all you will know.
This is a work that feels specifically designed to be as conspicuous and unyielding as possible in order to deliver its intense message. Many times before have we seen the realms of black and death metal come together for an overwhelming performance that could blot out the very sun should it choose to do so, but there’s always something special whenever a band dares to infuse more than a little bit of a punk mentality to really shake things up. A little bit of melody amongst the chaos can go a long way especially when you keep things short and sweet. It’s clear in every given moment of “Reign Destroyer” that Samiarus clearly understood that on an intimate record. This work makes damn sure that its violence brings across its theological platform of frustration and rage with the human race itself with each track an offensive upon the entire species and the whole work in all of its brutality construct to tear down the very ivory towers that we have built over the centuries. Never once does Samiarus take the easy way out. It’s in each track that they make damn sure to put forth a caustic performance that leaves no survivors, no hope, and no chance to even fathom an escape of any sort. It’s through their cataclysmic riffage that Samiarus makes “Reign Destroyer” a fast, devilish, and truly destructive EP that promises great things to come from an act that clearly already knows precisely what it’s doing to a terrifying degree.
Madness like this is what the underground was practically made for, and to it see such intensity still come about is just an incredibly satisfying thing to witness. Something that’s confident in what it dares to be and never misses an opportunity to deliver devastation of a truly world-ending sort, it’s the nearly twenty minutes of “Reign Destroyer” that leaves you bruised and battered yet wanting more. Samiarus takes its first step with immensity, and the world is truly theirs for the taking so long as they don’t let up their truly brutal assault.
