For all that can be be done within its vast confines and for all intents and purposes, black metal is something that can be quite difficult to pin down in the right circumstances. It’s a sound that is still surprisingly malleable even unto today with loads of different acts constantly coming out of the woodwork to show us just how far the style can be taken even as many think the specifications for black metal itself are quite strict. Even a little bit of a turn in a different direction can be more than enough for a band to make a foothold for itself and prosper from there. Demolyn may not be the most experienced act, but it’s clear the name takes that concept very seriously.
The tiniest shift can make a big difference in the right hands. Whether it’s an infusion of death metal or some other style or varying approaches to songwriting throughout a given work to make for a diverse listening experience, there are more than a few ways to go and bring about a work that doesn’t hold back in its creativity but always delivers something that can be deemed satisfying. Demolyn had but one album to call its own before this year, and it is quite evident after looking upon virtually every given track in this new EP that Demolyn spent its time incredibly well to ensure “Slay the Godhead” was more than a worthy successor to what came before. Boasting an eclectic five tracks across a runtime that just barely doesn’t clock in at twenty minutes overall, this is a work that goes head first into all that Demolyn laid as a foundation in its debut with the material in question here more than living up to the promise its predecessor laid forth. A dynamic work right to its core that never stays place in one time is something that many strive to achieve, and what Demolyn does here shows it is more than adept at delivering such magnificence on a level that it’s just fascinating to witness. From its ripping melodies to shifting approaches, “Slay the Godhead” is captivating and fiery in all the right portions to ensure that this record is a damn good time while still punishing with Demolyn doing a splendid job at demonstrating a wide breadth of its arsenal.
I would forgive anyone for thinking that “Slay the Godhead” isn’t the deepest EP of its kind, and it’s not, but there is plenty to behold within each of these tracks to not only show us that Demolyn has quite a bit to offer, but that this act can actually pull it off. The sky seems to be the limit with Demolyn’s amorphous approach to black metal so long as the act doesn’t dare to compromise its artistic vision.
