Some things just make sense. Given all that can be done within the vast spectrum that metal has to offer us on a daily basis, it’s only inevitable that we would come across a performance that doesn’t just feel right but make one wonder how anything else could ever come about. It really does seem to be the case sometimes that destiny is at work with success the only option. When Leper Colony first came around just two years ago, that certainly felt like the case given the pedigree of the musicians behind the act and all that they brought forward nothing short of expected from such talent and absolutely magnificent to become lost within. It was the concept of a sophomore effort that many of us became enamored with, and it is simply rewarding to the highest degree to see Leper Colony do more than just live up to their potential.

While this is death metal that’s anything but simple, what we’re given in this record is no less than what it means to understand your craft for all that it has to offer. There isn’t a single person behind this record that doesn’t have a deep knowledge of death metal such that one cannot deem it as anything short of overwhelming given all the past experience that’s at play here. That doesn’t always mean success, but it’s in the case of “Those of the Morbid” that Leper Colony now two-for-two in displaying power unbridled and fury undeniable. A vicious collection of nine eviscerating tracks, “Those of the Morbid” is a certifiable ripper from front to back. It was already in their debut effort that Leper Colony showed us what they could do as a cohesive unit with no survivors left in their wake, yet it is with all that was summoned from the writhing darkness that this record takes on a form that does more than simply offer justice to what came before. Rather, it’s a magnificent testament to what this bastion of madness delivers with death metal an artform of the most macabre sort when put in the hands of these masters. Every riff, every solo, every screech, and every dirge of intensity is something that Leper Colony capitalizes on in every given instance. Even well after the final screams fade from your ears, the sheer presence of “Those of the Morbid” is not something you’re going to forget any time soon.

Already have we been spoiled with exemplary death metal in 2025, yet it is here that Leper Colony brings extreme glory in immense fashion in such a compelling and interesting form without so much as a shred of this record something that I would dare change lest I immediately lower the wondrous quality of madness that’s at work throughout the whole of the record. It was before that Leper Colony caught our attention, but it is with here “Those of the Morbid” that Leper Colony is now a name that should absolutely be seared into the minds of any who would consider themselves a modern connoisseur of what death metal can still be.
