Even after so much innovation and daring that has occurred within the vast realms of metal over the decades, it’s endlessly fascinating for me to witness bands that still do their best to push the envelope, try something new, and deliver a performance that a listener can absolutely say that they’ve never experienced before. It’s something that has led plenty of musicians to pursuits of creativity that just don’t work for many of us, but for every thirty or so bands that miss the mark, there’s one that any given listener can go to for a creation that blows their mind and offers something that’s simply unheard of. The sort of effort that only comes around once every few years at best. For many, I have no doubt that Byonoisegenerator will deliver such a mind-melting performance.

Just from the cover art you can tell that this is an album that is going against the grain, and that would be a voracious understatement if ever there was one. A presence that has lurked in obscurity for years now, it’s in the seven years since their last offering that it’s obvious Byonoisegenerator has not remained idle with every given facet of their new opus of insanity, “Subnormal Dives”, showing us that this is an amorphous entity of metal that defies genre identification and never once compromises its own artistic vision. Calling their wild style jazzgrind, I can’t help but say that it fits extremely well. A constant barrage that overwhelms the senses and doesn’t leave so much as a moment to fully recover before this greatly distorted combination of death metal, grind, and jazz pummels you into dust with all of its progressive and technical notions leaving no room for error should you hope to come out of the other side of this experienced more than just a bloody pulp. Ten tracks that enchant, eviscerate, and compel you as you’re left helpless but such a raw and all-consuming power without so much as a glimmer of hope for escape, “Subnormal Dives” is far from anything that I have ever heard before. Literally every moment of this insane work has something to call its own to the point that I know damn well my words could never hope to truly encapsulate the madness that Byonoisegenerator has somehow channeled to bring this work to life. Sublime in its ferocity and transcendent in its extremely meticulous madness, this is an album destined to be hailed for all that it dared to be.

What we have here is a truly extraordinary creation. Something that boggles the mind and demands several listens in order to truly wrap your brain around, Byonoisegenerator held nothing back and made damn sure that this was a performance made for those who want something certifiably different. It’s a true challenge and something that cannot be likened wholly to anything else in the sprawling underground. “Subnormal Dives” aimed for the stars, and went far beyond in its pursuit for otherworldly grandeur.
