There is just nothing that can compare to when death metal is given the straightforward approach and given the real injection of fire that elevates such a work from potentially destructive to downright cataclysmic in the right hands. Fortunately for us, there are legions of names out there that are able to deliver such magnificence, but there are few joys out there to be had in the vast underground than that of finding new talent that is able to tap into such monstrous potential. It was with their debut album a little over three years ago that Corrupter did just that. Now, with their second album, they demonstrate to us why they’re a name that demands our respect.

Keeping things straightforward and relatively simple is always something that many bands have tried, but it’s sometimes a concept that is easier said than done. Death metal can be exceedingly tricky if you don’t have a real knack or understanding for what to do with such uncompromising brutality especially if you struggle to embody such madness in some form or another, yet it’s clear with a band like Corrupter that we were virtually guaranteed to have quality right from the get-go. With riffs in hand and a well-worn bloodied axe in the other, it’s the entirety of “Gloria in Profundis” that we’re given nothing but a truly vicious assault that shows us the exact kind of menace that we’re dealing with here. The very earth cracks open with the raw power that’s demonstrated in these eight unyielding tracks. Capable of delivering the most magnificent of rhythms while constantly ensuring the devastation is never sacrificed for anything, fire is given life while the screams of the long-damned echoes throughout the flesh-wreathed halls that “Gloria in Profundis” calls its own. Each track hits home to tremendous effect with suffocation always a factor throughout the whole of this performance while sunlight is never present to give those accursed souls so much as a foolish glimmer of hope in their whipped spirits. “Gloria in Profundis” has much to offer should you choose to traverse its depths with mercy certainly not something you will find.

This is death metal unadulterated. No fancy musings or seeking to deliver anything but overwhelming death and destruction no matter the cost, Corrupter proved itself to be a name to keep an eye on in its debut with everything about this effort showing us that they’re a name that demands to be respected. A work that demonstrates the very finest of what death metal like this can become, “Gloria in Profundis” is nothing if not punishing.
