Perpetually, there are legions of names throughout the underground that are rising to new heights. With all sorts of different avenues, styles, and approaches that any given band could take, there is no shortage of direction that a band could take so long as they possess the imagination and capacity to deliver such a creation that feels cohesive and damn effective at whatever its goal may be. For death metal, that goal still varies wildly but it tends to be in ways of evisceration and destruction. Even then, there are plenty of names out there that can deliver glorious suffering and torment on a level that a band can really grasp greatness so long as they take the right approach. Serpent Corpse found itself with promise in an overcrowded scene, but it’s now with their upcoming EP they’re offering the next step in their evolution that more than sets them apart from the competition.

It only takes a little nudge in the right direction to make for a wild difference in your sound. A little infusion of a different style here or a slight shift in songwriting there and you can have a massively different creation without even realizing it, but accomplishing it is a story on a completely different level that not many are able to envision and then seize for themselves. In death metal, we find ourselves faced with tons of innovation and ingenuity thanks to plenty of talent new and old that are constantly seeking to master the genre for themselves in their own individual ways. Serpent Corpse started down that path in magnificent fashion from its first full-length album just a few years ago, but it’s in the four tracks of their upcoming EP “Retaliate” that we can bear witness to Serpent Corpse going to a tremendous metamorphosis into a body of feral intensity that’s not to be denied. Much more than just a couple of riffs and down tuned strings, “Retaliate” more than lives up to its name. Calculated and downright devastating in all the right proportions, Serpent Corpse constantly shows us living up to its promise while consistently putting forth a display of power that’s ferocious, compelling, and simply sinister right from the very beginning. It’s an uncompromising ripper with its thrash tendencies to make the whole of the EP something that is fiery to the touch and nigh on irresistible as Serpent Corpse taps into the old school teachings of death metal in a way that we just do not get often enough despite the breadth of the underground.

Quickly does “Retaliate” become something more than a wannabe creation that invokes what has already been done before. Rather, Serpent Corpse makes it their own as they honor their predecessors while doing a damn fine job at carving their own path forward in exemplary fashion. A name that has more than earned the right to be considered as one of death metal’s most promising rising acts, it’s here that Serpent Corpse delivers at every possible turn.
