There aren’t very many things that can compare to when a band comes along that makes things feel fresh, interesting, and downright invigorating. We find ourselves constantly inundated by what the vast breadth of the underground has to offer even when it falls short and leaves us wanting more. Such is the way that things go, but it’s in spite of that we are still given occasional glimpses of what can still be when crafted by the right hands. Slowly but surely making a real name for itself, Cave Sermon’s rise is nothing to underestimate in any form with its third album the sort of inspiring creation of ingenuity and prowess that post metal can always use more of.
It’s no golden rule by any means, but it’s oftentimes the works that have their own sense of diversity, contrasting moments throughout the songwriting, and a real sense of spontaneous energy that make for the more engaging and fascinating record regardless of the genre. Naturally, that’s an immeasurably hard mix for anyone to deliver in a form that feels organic, passionate, and satisfying from top to bottom. To craft something that taps into such exquisite musicianship is to find yourself well and truly above the competition. Embodying those themes and becoming far more than what any would expect, Cave Sermon delivers overwhelming magnificence within the six tracks of “Fragile Wings”. Never once relying on the same techniques even with the same song to ensure that the entirety of the record is something that feels fluid in its captivity and compelling in its breadth, “Fragile Wings” went all-in, and you can feel that every possible turn. Featuring, from what I understand, the first vocal performance from the mastermind of Cave Sermon, this is a record of firsts that delivers again and again without fail to offer an invigorating listen that just keeps on giving in every track. Intoxicating to the highest degree and frenetic in virtually every aspect, Cave Sermon has crafted a work that not only stands out in the act’s discography, but the genre as a whole.
Many times have we been subjected to exquisite post metal that knows precisely what it’s doing, yet there’s something inexplicably special about what Cave Sermon has constructed. Winding and reveling in its own ecstasy with no one able to disrupt its gorgeous ebbs and flows, what has been executed throughout “Fragile Wings” cannot be deemed as anything less than excellence from top to bottom without exception.
