Truly, there is no school like the old school. There’s always been a desire from the metal community to maintain and preserve the classic styles for what they accomplished, yet, as you might imagine, it’s not always the case that we come before a creation that actually does those old concepts justice in any substantial form. On occasion, however, the underground delivers. Having been formed over a decade ago, Pyromancer’s collective experience across the underground has now led them here where the old school is channeled very heavily to offer us a dark experience that’s as unrelenting as it is foreboding in its power.

While it’s admirable to see bands come around to try and offer their own spin upon the old school to keep things fresh in some form or another, there’s always something to be said for those that can do the old ways straightforward and well. Sure, adhering to the old school can make for a stale and uninspired performance if you don’t attack it from the right angle, but to do it right is to tap into a side of the underground that people are constantly salivating for and can never get enough of. After seeing the fiery whips of Pyromancer lick the backs of damned soul, I am downright convinced that Pyromancer’s first album is that which we’re always searching. Such a simplistic approach can lead to ruin in the hands of the uncapable, yet it’s by the end of the second track that you become more than aware of the fury and prowess that Pyromancer commands to make “Absolute Dominion by Fire” do far more than live up to its name; the record dominates at every possible turn. Pyromancer relies on riffs for a solid melodic factor, but never once is that the only trick up the band’s sleeves as it’s through sinister craftsmanship and an immaculate understanding of what happens when black and death metal come together for a single intimidating listen that refuses to relent even in its smallest moments.

In every track, Pyromancer demonstrates immense competency. Where many seek to execute old school veneration through perpetuation, “Absolute Dominion by Fire” stands wildly tall amongst much of its competitors with all that it has to offer and delivers without compromise. This is the old school done right with all the justice it deserves. Setting aside the impressive previous experience that the members of Pyromancer have accomplished throughout the underground, Pyromancer has really tapped into something captivating and downright intoxicating with all that’s accomplished within “Absolute Dominion by Fire”.
