From the darkest reaches of what the underground can still become, anything is possible. Sights and experiences untold are but inches away should a band simply seize the opportunity and make something for themselves. It’s a difficult thing to ascertain for even the finest of musicians, yet that never once stops the underground from continuously being a source of grandeur that never lets up should you be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time or sheer luck. Tonight, it was a little bit of both for me. The name of Tetramorphe Impure is one that I was faintly aware of, but it’s with their first full-length album that this is a name the demands the respect and attention of many.
Out of the gate, it always helps to have an impressive artwork pull potential new listeners in. There’s no wrong that anyone could do in boasting artwork from Petri Ala-Maunus, and it’s clear from just the first few moments of “The Sunset of Being” that Tetramorphe Impure sets itself apart as a band that understands what it’s doing, how it wants to come across, and how to sound downright masterful in virtually every given moment. This is death-doom the likes of which people are always longing for. Damn near every given aspect of this record showcases a deep understanding of this craft that stems from the great old school examples that many of us have come to revere, yet it is ever important to remember that what’s achieved with “The Sunset of Being” is far more than a mere replication of what’s come before. Intense, driven, and undeniably heavy in terms of theme, performance, and raw presence, the four tracks that stretch across a nearly forty-minute runtime come alive beautifully with such macabre majesty that one cannot help but become overwhelmed by all that Tetramorphe Impure dares to bring to the table. With shadows deep and hellish fire in hand, this is a masterwork of death-doom that has got to be heard by any who consider themselves even a mild fan of the genre.
We’ve been blessed with quite a solid streak of high quality death-doom in recent times, yet there just something particularly intoxicating about what’s been done here that I still can’t quite put my finger on. Tetramorphe Impure is a true act of the underground. Having spent nearly the last two decades largely in dense obscurity, it’s with even monolithic moment of this record that we’re given a death-doom creation that casts a shadow over much of the competition. For all that is summoned and channeled throughout “The Sunset of Being”, excellence and macabre euphoria are just the beginning fow aht you can expect to find within.
