Given the current state of all things heavy in rock music, I think it’s safe to say that the genre is in good hands for the foreseeable future given all that we have coming out now promising greatness in the immediate future boding quite well if we’re to imagine what these acts can deliver several years down the line. There’s always more room for quality in a scene with as much potential as this, and we’re lucky enough to live in a time where we can be simply inundated by acts that have the passion to pursue such glorious heights with the capacity to execute it all with surprising efficiency. As such, however, competition is exceedingly stiff. There’s no room for error nor can a band lose even an inch of ground in order to deliver something with lasting impact. For their third album, Crystal Spiders understood the assignment magnificently to deliver a performance that’s indicative of the style’s modern trends.
There are many paths to success in any modern sound of rock music with innovation and simple mastery being the two most common trails that bands tend to go down given that they offer the best chance that any band likely have to become something that’s known, respected, and anticipated the scene over. The bar can be quite high in both regards, however, as it’s utterly essential for you to make the work your own and not some cheap copy of what came before. That’s especially true if you don’t seek to make your sound something that pushes the envelope for what your genre can be. Whatever it was that Crystal Spiders sought during the crafting of “Metatonia”, it’s clear that they sought to do justice by everything that this corner of rock music has become in the past decades with the results such fascinating to bear witness to. Riff-based that takes more than a few cues from NWOBHM while ensuring a mild sense of psychedelia that a lot of heavy rock has been eliciting in recent years, “Metatonia” has loads of character that combines beauty with the sense of melody and a devious understanding of enthrallment that permeates every given moment of these seven tracks. Overflowing with a devil-may-care attitude and the sort of soundtrack that one could ask for when having an all-night bender as you have the time of your life.
Crystal Spiders did not seek to reinvent what the sound has become nor what it can still be, but damn if they don’t pull it off with tremendous effect! In a scene with loads of contenders, Crystal Spiders hits the nail right on the head and delivers excellence with “Metaonia” in such a form that feels organic, fun, and fully fleshed out as a multi-dimensional creation with so much potential energy stored in each and every moment. It may not be the record that blows peoples’ minds, but it’s a record that’s more than deserving of your time for all that it dares to be and accomplishes in spectacular fashion.
