I vividly remember learning when the one-of-a-kind funeral doom act of Un came to an end. It was devastating! In the light of such news, I could only hope that at least some of its members would come back around to offer us something that would tap into what Un did, even it came in a vastly different form. As it would happen, the universe already provided us with an answer: Reburied. Their first album just two years ago was something that pummeled to the highest degree without so much as a shred of compromise, yet it’s now with their second offering that Reburied shows us just how far they can take their particular brand of ferocious death metal.
We’re all familiar with what it means to death metal that is nothing more than efficient. A large, imposing mass that offers nothing in return but damnation and suffering of an unforgiving sort that’s able to adhere to tendencies that the style has long held; nothing to deny. Yet, that doesn’t mean everyone has the key to success in whatever form that may come in. While I cannot even begin to fathom even the slightest in the ways of the true nuance of death metal and what it takes to craft a work of the genre that delivers in more ways than one, Reburied clearly knows precisely what they’re doing in every given moment of “Flesh Mourning”. A deluge of undeath and an unyielding attitude that permeates the very soul of these eight tracks, once the worm of Reburied bores its way into your skull, it’s not easy to extract it before it consumes your very mind. This is a madness that is born beyond that of mere riffs or a simple understanding of what death metal can be. Rather, “Flesh Mourning” revels in dabbling in adjacent styles to offer us a dynamic performance while constantly and consistently offering horrific madness born out of raw, unfettered decay the likes of which can be traced back directly to the old school of the sound which Reburied prove to be adept students of to tremendous effect. There isn’t a single song in this offensive that doesn’t stand tall on its own to make the work not something that can easily be brushed aside. On the contrary, Reburied ensures that “Flesh Mourning” is a potent effort that is sure to leave you addicted and crawling back for more.
While I will always mourn the loss of Un, we must inevitably move forward. We cannot always be left wanting for what was while we allow what is to pass us by whether it be intentionally or not. What Reburied offers us here is death metal the likes of which we have absolutely heard before, yet there is something in the very fibers of this dense tapestry of undeath that makes the work something that demands to be explored wholeheartedly. Voracious and carnivorous even in its smallest moments, “Flesh Mourning” holds nothing back.
