Disembodiment – Spiral Crypts

There’s nothing that can ever truly come close to touching upon death metal that has a real sense of nastiness without sacrificing everything else in achieving that level of truly feral horror. Unfortunately, though, it can oftentimes be quite some time between efforts that are actually able to do a little more than simply tap into what such existential dread can offer us even after all that such terrifying reaches have already accomplished over the decades. Sometimes, a little bit of new blood is all you need to make things feel fresh, invigorating, and downright haunting. With their first full-length album, Disembodiment does that and more.

While this kind of death metal is always steeped in the old school for practically every intent and purpose, it’s almost mandatory that a band still manages to find their own path through it all while constantly delivering this overwhelming sense of filth that consistently manages to do more than replicate what’s come before. It is an exceedingly tricky thing to do, yet Disembodiment manages to thread that needle and achieve greatness within every excruciating inch that’s to be found throughout “Spiral Crypts”. This is a relentless work that’s heavily reliant on riffs but always managing to tap into a deep sense of hysteria, panic, and mania that permeates the entirety of this record with a clip from the legendary film, The Thing, offering the final moments of the record that greatly encapsulates the paranoia, fear, and menace that this record has in spades. Really taking into consideration what it means to writhe on the very floor of the death metal underground while never once allowing itself to become restrained in virtually any form, this is a tremendous step forward for what Disembodiment promises with their debut EP four years ago. We see all sorts of promise and potential throughout much of what modern death metal has to offer, but there’s something special about what’s been accomplished here. Achieving a massive stride forward for all that they can be, Disembodiment ought to be immensely proud of what they’ve accomplished within all that “Spiral Crypts” dares to summon from the screaming depths.

“Spiral Crypts” offers much in its sonic onslaughts and addicting grooves that all come together brilliantly with Disembodiment’s own personal brand of undeath and rot, yet it’s the band’s own evolution that I find myself the most fascinated by. Disembodiment had many paths it could have taken in the crafting of this work. It’s at every turn that we see a band quickly coming into its own not just with its particular genre, but its own personal style that makes the act stand out, allows them to become something that is their own, and allows the listener to become lost within a labyrinthine flesh hell that offers no reprieve for even the most fascinated of damned souls.

“Spiral Crypts” releases on July 11th via Everlasting Spew Records!
