The pursuit of heaviness is something that many bands have strived to achieved as the years have gone on. That fanaticism still holds true well into today with all sorts of bands constantly coming out of the woodwork to show us what they can bring to the table, and while there’s tons of promise and potential throughout the vast underground with all that it has to offer, it’s not terribly often that we get a band that really knows how to capitalize on the opportunities the concept presents. A calculated presence is something that cannot be denied for what it does manage to accomplish. A band that can really show us what they’re made of is not something that can go unnoticed for long. With their first full-length album, Ravine is poised to make moves that’ll take them to the forefront of those rising throughout modern heaviness.
There’s always something to be said about unchecked heaviness that sprawls out in all directions seeking naught but madness and destruction, but there’s just something so captivating and satisfying about a band that’s able to bring it all together, conduct it, hone it, and focus it all into a single performance that has much to offer apart from a handful of interesting melodies here and there. Across the five tracks of their first album, “Chaos and Catastrophes”, Ravine makes it extremely obvious in every given moment of the record that they have a practically masterful level of understanding of their craft already. It’s a relatively simple and straightforward creation that has much to offer for any fan of stoner or sludge metal with its riffs and grooves that really know how to get under your skin and infect your ears to a dramatic degree, yet there’s always something right underneath the surface of “Chaos and Catastrophes” that begs you to delve deeper into order to scratch that itch for more that Ravine now infects you with. Balls-to-the-walls heavy and never missing an opportunity to pummel the listener into a pulp as they only plead for more, this is the kind of sludgy intoxication that we’re always salivating for! Ravine follows up its lauded EP from six years ago in singularly immense fashion that builds off of all that entrance was with the whole of “Chaos and Catastrophes” that promised creation of magnificence that old fans are sure to be more than enthralled by and new fans will be left wondering where Ravine has been all their lives.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see many claiming this record is the electric shock to the groin that the sound has been in desperate need of lately despite the latent talent that’s always lurking just underneath the entry level surface of the sound at large. Holding nothing back across a lengthy creation that’s fueled by riffs and backed up by supremely precise power, it’s the whole of “Chaos and Catastrophes” that holds nothing back and makes damn sure you remember this thrashing well such that you’ll be compelled to come back for more time and time again.
