Filth – Time to Rot

While raw heaviness is the name of the game in many areas of the metal underground, intensity and nastiness is oftentimes the path to success in many others. It’s something that has allowed many styles, especially death metal, to become magnificent underbellies of madness and unpolished extremity the likes of which still require a great deal of understanding of the craft at hand in order to control it all properly and not succumb to the very power you’re hoping to channel. There’s always room for more when it comes to embodying that intensity on such a level that is nigh on compelling. With their first EP, Sweden’s Filth takes a tremendous step forward to quickly surge past much of the competition that lies on the seething floor of the underground.

The first steps of any band are what many people oftentimes look towards in the hopes of some semblance of greatness or an immediate sense of grandeur that sets great expectations and offers listeners an experience that leads one to fathom of future mastery on top of what has already been accomplished. However, such creations are not always shiny, polished, or clean in practically any form. The embodiment of what it means to be overwhelming in your nastiness such that your very music has a significant layer of crust that coats every facet that it has to offer, Filth more than lives up to its name with “Time to Rot”. Naught but six tracks adorn this EP, yet it’s clear every step along the way that Filth knows exactly what they want to do with every given inch of this creation giving the listener no reprieve or peace of any sort. Between each seething riff and into the writhing depths that Filth has to offer, “Time to Rot” is downright pulsating with gnarly insects that infect each track to perfection! This EP is simple in concept and utterly deadly in execution. An abrasive, raw, and unforgiving work that wields and cuts less like a refined sword with a well-defined edge but more of a dull battered axe whose edge has been long chipped away by the bones of its enemies, to the point and undeniably effective in its violent methods.

It’s obvious to point out that there are plenty of bands like this throughout the underground, and it’s in that truth that one must realize that it’s the little thing that set you apart from the competition to not just make your mark known but to ensure that you don’t become lost in an ocean of others. Filth does far more than live up to its name with “Time to Rot” setting the stages for an onslaught of ripping death metal that leaves nothing to chance nor any survivors left to tell the tale.
