Puteraeon – Mountains of Madness

Ever have the great writers of fiction and fantasy had a home in the sprawling realms of metal. They have always been a constant source of inspiration the likes of which throngs upon throngs of bands have made magnificent careers out of, and all it takes to perpetuate that excellence is a little bit of ingenuity and a solid understanding of your craft to really figure out how much more these fonts of excellence have to offer. For all intents and purposes, Lovecraft still has massive presence in what metal can bring forward. Many have tapped into that deep well with few able to really embody what such an inspiration and elicit. With their latest, Puteraeon continues to prove be one of those few that are able to do the legend justice.

The problem that many tend to face when trying to do right to something as ubiquitous as Lovecraft is that overwhelming, mind-breaking madness is not something that one can easily instill into their performance. It’s one thing to offer a sense of grandeur or unease throughout your work, but to bring to the table that terrifying sense of loss of one’s very own sanity is to go that extra mile and deliver a performance that feels as true to its source as it is uncompromising in damn near every aspect. Within the writhing confines of “Mountains of Madness”, Puteraeon accomplishes that to a significant degree. A swirling effort that never once backs down as Puteraeon utilizes pristine old school Swedish death metal to an undeniable level of intensity such that one has no choice but to become absolutely pulverized mentally and physically before such might. Steeped in the very story that has become a hallmark of all things Lovecraftian, “Mountains of Madness” does more than enough justice for its original source material with Puteraeon doing a magnificent job at covering much of what the story holds within from the haunting mystery, the sinister nature even in the smallest moments, the ensuing madness that condemns all that venture too far, and the sheer intensity of it all!

No stone is left unturned as Puteraeon perpetuate their brand of psyche-melting death metal that leaves no survivors untainted after such a harrowing and perilous journey into the coldest reaches. This is a band that has been achieving intense greatness for years now with their especially potent strain of Swedish death metal, and it’s throughout the entirety of “Mountains of Madness” that the band has reached an undeniable peak with explosive results.
