We’re fortunate enough to live in a time where death is simply overflowing with acts new and old that are able to keep the genre moving forward in more ways than one with those old school veterans doing far more than keeping those original lessons alive. Even they can learn new tricks and offer fresh performances that can really astound even after a legendary career. Of all the bands that could use an introduction in that regard, Cryptopsy’s reputation precedes them magnificently. If it was with their 2023 album of “As Gomorroah Burns” that saw the genre staple come back in full force with their first album in eleven years, it’s here with their ninth effort that Cryptopsy shows us what they can still be.
After a tremendous run that defined what many consider death metal to be at its pinnacle over the course of over thirty years, what else is there for you to do? That’s a question that not many take into consideration when we’re talking with the bigger names like Cryptopsy as we still find ourselves immersed in their older material, yet it is within their newer efforts that Cryptopsy adeptly explores their sound in an effort to still become an act that can deliver, surprise, impress, and demolish in such a way that showcases all the talent, menace, and prowess that the band has ascertained after decades in the game. “An Insatiable Violence” more than lives up to its name. Born of a dream that tells of a gruesome tale that’s practically pulled right from the mythical mind of David Cronenberg where torture and pleasure are greedily explored in haunting detail, Cryptopsy’s technical approach to brutality shines overwhelmingly with a luster that puts much of the competition to shame as we’re given a deluge of uncompromising riffs woven into voracious songwriting that seeks the very light of your soul with your flesh simply not able to keep up, peeling away and splintering your bones as the raw speed of “An Insatiable Violence” leaves nothing to chance. Laced with themes that reflect society and the sheer audacity of mankind to sin in grotesque forms in every imaginable way, this is a record that paradoxically seeks Cryptopsy at their most surgical as well as some of their most brutal, especially when it comes to the songwriting itself.
Writhing in fury, pain, and frustration while always spreading its viscera-drenched tentacles outward such that nobody is safe, the very presence of “An Insatiable Violence” is not something that can be easily ignored no matter what your experience is with Cryptopsy or death metal as a whole. We have been inundated with loads of high quality performances already in 2025, and I can feel it in my very bones that Cryptopsy is a name that will be ringing in the ears of many for months to come as the sheer power of “An Insatiable Violence” is not something to be denied lest you find yourself eviscerated before such intensity with the memory of your pathetic existence naught but a stain upon the soil.
“An Insatiable Violence” releases on June 20th via Season of Mist!
