The passion of the underground is not something that is easily swept aside. Even after finding oneself entrenched in all that the underground has to offer in its many halls and around treacherous corners, there are still leagues of talented musicians that are seeking to expand their sonic arsenal and deliver new material in a way that feels fresh for themselves as well as listeners but in a way that feels organic, lively, and inspired through a deep love for the sound. After experience that spans over thirty years, it’s from the minds behind the revered Ouija that a new entity has been formed to revere the old ways with an approach that feels compelling and downright sinister: Path of Redemption.
Already, the sheer fact that we’re dealing with long-standing pillars of the Spanish black metal scene should be all the reason that one should need to investigate this debut EP, but success is never guaranteed just because there are respectable names behind any given project. There are but four tracks that Path of Redemption offers us to begin its reign, and it’s throughout the whole of “Echoes from the Depths” that we get a blistering display of black metal that does more than enough justice for the old school of black metal with a modern coat that feels as intense as it does satisfying to become lost in with every step taken by this act showing us the depths of mastery at work here. Fiercely melodic in moments yet never once afraid from a barbaric display of power that contrast magnificently with its smaller and more atmospheric moments, “Echoes from the Depths” left nothing off the table and made damn sure that a vivid picture is carefully painted. This EP is a call to arms for those who find themselves wandering in search of black metal that practically has it all, and it’s not a hard case to argue that this debut does that and a little bit more. Viciously dynamic and outright hypnotic for its vast rhythmic aspect, Path of Redemption sought domination through undeniable prowess and a deep understanding of what this sound is capable of in the best of hands with “Echoes from the Depths” sprawling in its overwhelming competency.
Whatever is to come next from Path of Redemption, it should be obvious to any who find themselves before these eighteen minutes that this is a foundational work that a band of real talent and substance can build something out of. The sort of debut that can act as a new beginning for everyone involves, the very soul of “Echoes from the Depths” is not something to be underestimated with the power and talent found within these four tracks nothing short of mesmerizing for anyone who considers themselves a modern fan of black metal.
