Impureza – Alcázares

It’s no secret that a little bit can take you a long way. There have been countless scenarios where we’ve seen bands come around and do small things here or there to make for a vastly different and impactful performance that leaves the listener ravenous for more, and then there are those that go all in to make something that is wholly their own. Death metal has been no stranger to such creations in recent times with there being all sorts of innovation and exploration throughout the sound that has greatly expanded the possibilities of what the genre can be in adventurous yet competent hands. For over twenty years now, Impureza has been a dominating force in that regard with their forthcoming album nothing short of genius in that and every regard.

To be fair, it’s not the first time that death metal has become one with the Spanish art of flamenco, yet it’s one of those seldom travelled routes in the world of extreme metal that just isn’t explored often whatsoever. Personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a novel idea that I haven’t had the pleasure of becoming lost within since the last album from First Fragment four years ago, and such a thing should not be overpopulated lest it risk losing the power of being unique and something to look forward to as it embodies quality over quantity. With all that they’ve summoned within the eleven tracks of “Alcázares”, it demands to be made clear in every possible form that Impureza has returned in a big way with what’s arguably destined to be one of the most dynamic and flavorful creations death metal will have to boast by the year’s end. Unashamed in its progress nature and doing an extremely stupendous job with its flamenco supercharge, “Alcázares” is a magnificent album with so much flair, personality, and flavor that is an absolute joy to fall into every time for all of its infectious energy. But don’t let all of that fool you for a millisecond for this record is singularly punishing! Brutal to the core and all the crazier for it, there’s so much to uncover throughout the vastness of “Alcázares” with all the power, menace, and nuance that one could ask for from a band of this caliber.

After being in the game for over twenty years, it’s no surprise that Impureza is still a force to be reckoned with, yet that never once takes away from the magnitude of what’s pulled off here. Nothing short of calculated intensity with a passion and approach that’s as rare as it is compelling to become one with, there isn’t so much as an inch of “Alcázares” that isn’t overwhelmingly deserving of your full attention.

“Alcázares” releases on July 11th via Season of Mist!
