Hexrot – Formless Ruin of Oblivion

On occasion, we’re given something that not only defies expectations but reminds us of what it means to go against the grain and really go for something that is wholly and undeniably your own. The underground is always a tremendous source for such creations that lurk in obscurity and seek experiences that are seldom found outside the very fringes of what metal itself can be. Understandably, victorious acts in that regard are few and far between, but those that excel tap into something that words can hardly describe. Having gotten their start just three years ago, it’s with their forthcoming album that Hexrot strove for the very brink of insanity with their new album that succeeds in dark majesty where others are consumed into nothingness.

Throughout damn near any given minute of this work, it’s obvious that we’re not dealing with a band that’s merely dabbling in the outer reaches of possibilities that metal has to offer. Rather, Hexrot quickly makes itself known as an explorative act that holds nothing back in its search for a chaos that’s as sweet as it is forbidden. Constantly writhing in the most euphoric torture that sees Hexrot pull out all the stops to give a vicious demonstration of what they’re already capable of, “Formless Ruin of Oblivion” is a real feast for the senses that never once holds anything back and makes damn sure to leave an undeniable stain upon your very soul as Hexrot brings forth a captivatingly wild display of prowess that stretches across many corners of extreme metal from death to thrash to black metal while making more than enough time for some electronic experimentation. As haunting in its expansive nature as it is destructively awe-inspiring in its intensity, this is not an album to underestimate! It’s an incredibly technical work that revels in its avantgarde nature yet never does Hexrot allow such labels to get in their head, nor do they ever once lose sight of the greater picture of what “Formless Ruin of Oblivion” is in its entirety: malevolent and powerful yet sublime and immeasurably intricate. And none of this is even taken into consideration that “Formless Ruin of Oblivion” is essentially one breathless 35-minute performance that offers even further proof that Hexrot is a name who’s potential and capacity is not something to be denied lest they rend every fiber of your being into the bleak void from which they came from and will eventually return.

Where the unknown and primeval chaos meet, Hexrot clearly thrives. This is a nebulous territory of the metal spectrum that can be a lot to handle for any musician of any caliber and to witness any sort of act come together, tackle the challenge head-on, and emerge better than ever before with a singularly powerful effort as proof of their ascertained knowledge; not many survive. Go and pick any given track of what “Formless Ruin of Oblivion” has to offer. Even in the fleeting moments of atmosphere that gets under your skin, Hexrot showcases an understanding of their craft that is downright terrifying to witness yet mesmerizing to become one with. It’s here that we witness the early stages of a name rising through the underground to claim a destiny many strive for yet extremely few can come even a little close to. For all that they delivered here, it’s obvious that Hexrot is anything but a part of that common rabble.
