It’s in many instances that we’ve seen all sorts of different acts come around to offer us a new vision of what metal can be in the hands of the dedicated and imaginative, yet, understandably, such creations are few and far between. It’s such a thing that adds to the raw mystique of whenever a qualifying work does manage to make an appearance no matter what source it may stem from, and there’s always one looming on the horizon if one knows where to look or if luck is on their side. Tonight, luck is certainly on my side as it’s with the fortunate discovery of the third album from King Witch that I feel lucky to have stumbled upon a work that accomplishes such splendor and a little bit more.
While there is a lot to admire about a band that tries to really shoot for the stars and create an illustrious wall of sound that is as dense and dynamic as it is satisfying and engaging, it’s simply too much for many. It can be all well and good to try and fail with there still being grace in failure at times, but there just isn’t anything that can compare to a band knowing themselves inside and out along with their music to then deliver a performance that feels enthralling and organic in a way that is downright intoxicating. With a blend that takes more than a little from the worlds of doom, heavy metal, rock, and beyond, King Witch really strove for something exceptional within the eight tracks of “III”, and it would be an understatement to say they achieved such a lofty goal. Exceedingly strong in spirit and somehow even stronger in the finer ways of musicianship from tremendous songwriting to its striking vocals, it’s the entirety of “III” that feels like an undeniable treat for the senses. It captures a little bit of that hard to ascertain atmosphere that blues rock has become overly renowned for with all the punch and bounce that masterful creations are made out of when they teeter on the thin line that divides metal from hard rock with every possible inch of this work doing a tremendous job at embodying the best of both worlds.
Downright electrifying from the first track and capable of so much, the very soul of “III” is something that takes on some of the finest aspects that one can ask for from a creation as bold and well-defined as what we have here. This is sort of brilliance that we are lucky to get even once in a year. What King Witch pulls off here demonstrates the sheer magnitude of what’s to be had in virtually every possible fiber of the creation at large; overflowing with talent and more than competent at virtually everything that’s brought to the table.
