Haggus – Destination Extinction

The monkeys-and-typewriters theorem isn’t something that I would normally say has its place in the sprawling world of metal, but it certainly does at times feel as though there are concepts that are tried by many albeit greatly unsuccessful in many instances with it really only being a matter of time before somebody somewhere does it right. We’ve seen countless examples of brutal death  metal/slam/grind/whatever you want to call it try their hand at delivering their own brand of brutality with excessive silliness or humor, and it has sadly been years since the last time I came across a work that actually does such a relatively straightforward concept well. Whilst continuing their overwhelming domination of much of what modern grind can be, Haggus delivers what extremely few others can.

This is one of those bands that is a real oddity for many different reasons, and the band’s reputation certainly reflects that. Never once being ones to shy away from the overt themes of hyper violence that grind has long been associated with, Haggus has really become the embodiment of what this corner of the underground can be in its finer moments with the overwhelming understanding of the genre quickly allowing Haggus to dare to become so much more than the competition. The evidence of that is everywhere even outside this mauler of a record, yet it’s every given inch of “Destination Extinction” that we are given an unyielding display that showcases an imposing breadth of what this band is capable off. Overflowing with viscera-coated hooks that pull you right into the record, a devilishly intoxicating bounce that permeates a staggering amount of the runtime, and a don’t-give-a-fuck attitude that immediately proves its worth to set “Destination Extinction” even further away from any and all possible contenders that would dare try to step foot into the ring. Easily, this is the sort of record that should put an immediate stank-face-of-approval from anyone who can see what’s going on here. Simple but highly effective from masters of their craft that make it seem as easy as breathing after doing it for so long, Haggus dominates at each turn and they look damn good while doing it!

Not since the last offering from Chopping Mall I have been so enthralled by something so heavy, so well thought out, yet so stupid in so many regards. I love it! There’s a reason why we don’t see many bands like Haggus floating around the scene with every element brought to the table in this offering showcasing precisely why that’s the case time after time. For all that is to be said about “Destination Extinction”, it demands to be made clear that evisceration is the destiny of all who come before it even if Haggus is only messing about while doing so.
