Over the years, we’ve seen many try their hands at dissonance. It’s the sort of thing that can easily bring about a stupendous work that taps into a different side of heaviness that can be immensely rewarding, but when the right parameters aren’t met then we’re usually presented with a work that’s a tad hollow for one reason or another. Fortunately, we’ve found ourselves in a time where many acts have come out of the woodwork to really show us how it’s all done in an exemplary form with such an approach coming in all sorts of different styles. Quickly, Defacement has made itself known as one such name that delivers such intensity and far more, and it’s with their forthcoming effort that this act takes the fury inward to make for a truly compelling performance.
Already, Defacement has made itself known as a creation that is not to be trifled with lest you find yourself pulverized into a fine red mist given the raw intensity that this band offers us with indiscretion ever since their pummeling debut. It’s only as time has gone on that this name has become ever more familiar with their particularly brutal craft with the atmospheres, riffs, and raw integrity of the performance at large constantly and consistently keeping Defacement ahead of the competition in a big way. It was just last year that they raised the bar even higher with “Duality”, yet it is here with “Doomed” that I find myself particularly entranced. Turning their attention upon the self and the delicate wobbling between madness and sanity, peace and chaos, life and death, structure and collapse, “Doomed” is a piece that is nigh on unyielding for all that it has to offer. What we’re given here is a bewildering demonstration of raw aggression through eviscerating riffs while still more than adept at the smaller, more sinister moments that lurk right beneath the surface of the psyche with all the menace and terror that one could ask for but also the subtlety and nuance that’s necessary to amplify each and every aspect of the album to be as self-sustaining as it is potent.
Venture forth into the roiling madness of “Doomed” if you dare. To do so is to tempt fate and the mettle of your very spirit. Should you come out the other side then you will be categorically transformed physically and metaphysically; within and without. Defacement has been on the rise for years now, yet it is with each and every possible facet of “Doomed” that they’ve tapped into a terrifying new territory that is horrifying to bear witness to for all intents and purposes.
