People do love to throw around the term “if something is broke, don’t fix it” whenever something comes around that seeks to change even the tiniest factor from a well-tested formula. Fortunately, it’s something that we’re slowly seeing less of, and that has really allowed many bands to flourish in all forms of innovation and stylistic choice even if such changes from the classic veins are minor at their most dramatic. It’s in that grey area between straightforward and innovation that many bands tend to thrive with plenty still coming out of the woodwork to see what they can do to both perpetuate the greatness of their sound and advance their own flavors. With their third offering, Supernaughty deliver on a level many others can only ever hope to attain.
I have always been a fan of bands that are able to make any given sound their own by taking chances and seeing what works versus what doesn’t, yet there’s nothing I can say that can deny the satisfaction of watching a band take the straightforward approach to play by the pillars of their genre and really make something tantalizing out of it. Having already proven themselves to do that to great effect, it’s with their forthcoming album of “Apocalypso” that Supernaughty most definitely stuck to their guns while implementing more a metallic approach that well and truly opened the flood gates for what they can bring to the table. Eight tracks that are simply overflowing with gripping riffs and that feel-good stoner attitude that Supernaughty has brought to a tremendous extent throughout the whole of this performance, it can be damn difficult to find yourself within the molten ecstasy of “Apocalypso” and not find yourself singularly electrified by the performance at large. This is the kind of creation that defines what it means to go bigger, bolder, and really put yourself out there to show people that you are capable of so much more with Supernaughty constantly consistently showing us throughout the entirety of “Apocalypso” precisely why they’re an act that has demanded our attention for some time now.
With a fresh metallic coating to really highlight some of their best aspects, Supernaughty does no less than dominate for the whole of this intoxicating performance. What we have here is stoner heaviness brought about in an exquisite form that still manages to very much so do its own thing while always adhering to the greatest aspects that the sound has become known for over the decades with everything coming together to make “Apocalypso” a certifiable powerhouse that’s not to be denied in any possible form lest a singularly superb display of power blitz right past you.
