Over the years, we’ve been truly inundated with all sorts of new talent coming out of the world of technical death metal. It’s a great sight to behold, but it can be all too easy for plenty of these acts to struggle to standout given the high bar that comes with the territory of just being in the sound. Despite that, we still find ourselves before loads of immense talent that refuses to stay silent for long, keeping us on our toes in great suspense. At some point, it’s only natural for some established names to come together and create new sounds of their own outside of names that we’re already familiar with. Unaligned has only been putting out music for a few years with the pedigree of its members speaking volumes, yet it is here with their first full-length album that technical death metal is given the direct injection of intensity that some can argue that the sound has been desperately needing as of late.

Just to take even the briefest glance at the people involved with Unaligned is to quickly come to the realization that we’re dealing with an act that already knew what they were doing beforehand with the sheer prospect of such talent coming together downright mouthwatering. Featuring talent that’s pulled off glory in acts like Inferi, Fleshbore, Demon King, and Withered Throne, Unaligned was already ahead of the curb before throwing down so much as a single note! With that in mind, it’s not terribly wild to see that “A Form Beyond” is as bold and impactful as it is, yet that doesn’t take away so much as an iota of how sweet such an eviscerating performance is from top to bottom. Adhering to many of the pillars that modern technical death metal has become known for, it demands to be made clear that Unaligned is most definitely carving out their own path as you can see the beginnings of that all throughout these eight unyielding tracks. While it’s the constant onslaught of technicality with blended-in riffs that often take centerstage for “A Form Beyond”, it’s in the moments where Unaligned pull back for fleeting atmospheric moments that I find myself particularly entranced. They’re spread throughout the record quite sparsely, but it’s in their brief excursions that Unaligned accomplishes a lot, allowing the wide-reaching blend of “A Form Beyond” to take on a life that’s even further layered than what was already apparent to make the album foundational for what we can come to expect from Unaligned in the future.

This is the big step forward for Unaligned, yet I cannot help but feel confident in saying that they’re more than ready to take on the scene at large for all that they’ve accomplished within this record has the raw makings of greatness about them. Where many others might have something interesting in some form or another, it’s the absolute entirety of “A Form Beyond” that we’re given a display of power and mastery that cannot be denied lest your very soul be shredded and thrown into oblivion by such overwhelming might.
