Growth has always been an important part of any artist’s journey. Whether it’s exploring different avenues or really mastering your instrument such that you bring only the finest to whatever performance you’re putting together, progressing and moving forward has been integral in what has always kept the underground fascinating in many different forms. We are fortunate enough to live in a time where there are legions of musicians out there pushing themselves to really become a force to be reckoned with all of their own. As one, the American death metal variety of Thorn has been pushing that concept to a great extent. Now four albums deep, Thorn is quickly making itself known as a powerhouse that cannot be ignored for a damn thing.
While we can sit here all day and talk about the merits of coming into your own and allowing yourself to take your sound to new horizons in order to find something that feels fresh and interesting for any number of reasons, there’s nothing like still managing to hold onto the core aspects of your sound from your very beginnings and learning to keep it all vastly engaging alongside your growing repertoire of talent. In the case of Thorn, we’ve seen the death metal aspects come more front and center yet it’s with a consistently firm grasp on the capacity of a solid injection of doom that Thorn still maintains loads of flair and intrigue into its works with “Nebulous Womb of Eternity” benefitting from that captivating unholy union. Overflowing with riffs and dripping with atmosphere in choice moments such that you can truly feel the walls of reality closing in on your damned soul, Thorn is more than well-equipped to make this nasty, viscera-drenched form of death metal feel as authentic as it is invigorating. “Nebulous Womb of Eternity” knows precisely what it’s doing out of the gate as it draws on all the previous experience of Thorn to make for spine-breaking intensity that yields nothing less than untold brutality and an unforgiving sense of hopelessness as Thorn’s might continuously oppresses the spirit whilst searing flesh from a mere touch. Colossal in every right, a monolith unto itself, there isn’t so much as a shred of “Nebulous Womb of Eternity” is that isn’t utterly rapturous for all that it does to tear down the intricate fabrics of this physical plane.
Lurking in even the smallest moments of the album to weaken you before returning with a fresh offensive that’s nothing short of barbaric in nature, Thorn should be incredibly proud of what it has concocted here. A massive step forward for the mastermind behind the name and something whose power cannot be underestimated lest you find yourself consumed by this overwhelming beast, it’s in every moment that “Nebulous Womb of Eternity” beckons you further in while it’s in every subsequent moment that you’re torn to pieces again and again in the most horrific fashion, yet you cannot help but return like addict sating your consuming fix.
“Nebulous Womb of Eternity” releases on August 8th via Transcending Obscurity Records!
